The Seasons of Eastern University

Although I have lived in Radnor for nearly 23 years and have passed by the pond on my way to various places in the area, I have only recently become familiar with the Eastern campus. My daughter interned in the PR department a few years ago, so I had been introduced to its buildings and the general layout of the University, but at that time I had not really viewed its structures or been aware of its atmosphere. |
In late October of last year, I was asked by Rich Merriman, a Trustee of the school, and member of the Friends of the Library, to “paint” the campus. We estimated about a dozen paintings, and I selected the theme of the “seasons” since I had exactly one year to prepare for an exhibit planned for student weekend, and the leaves were just beginning to change denoting the fall season.

I began my task one brisk afternoon, leaving my office late in the day. The sky was mottled and dusk was approaching. I watched the sky change as I drove the 25 minute ride to the campus hoping I wouldn’t lose the light. When I arrived, I parked at Ott Hall and walked from the hill down to the lake. The sky was changing, but beautiful and the light perfect to present an overview of the lake reflecting Walton Hall spotlit by the setting sun.

On smaller canvases, I most often paint “plein air,” or on-site... but on larger scale paintings I take many reference photographs to help “capture the moment” and then translate the impressions onto canvas in my studio. This first effort in the seasonal series became “Autumn at Eastern,” which began my journey through a year of discovering the picturesque qualities of the University.
